Although the leaders of the US, Mexico and Canada have announced a new trade agreement to replace the North American Free Trade Agreement, or NAFTA, North Dakota industries say there's still much the pact has left to address.

The administration of U.S. President Donald Trump imposed the sanctions on Canada and Mexico in June, citing national-security reasons.

Washington suspected that Canada, being the sole supplier of both raw metal resources to the United States, could be used as a drop point for supplies coming from other nations and shipped into the country with the presumption that they were produced in Canadian facilities.

This measure seeks to thwart the potential rise in steel and aluminum imports to the country.

Beginning Oct. 25, the Department of Finance says, imports of seven steel products will be subject to a 25% surtax when the level of those imports exceeds historical norms.

Chinese stocks tumble to multi-year lows after Wall St rout
So far this week, the market capitalisation of the Shanghai stock index has fallen by 8.43 percent to 27.56 trillion yuan. Chinese stocks rebounded after steep declines Thursday, closing higher Friday with blue-chip stocks leading the rally.

The products covered include heavy plate, concrete reinforcing bar, energy tubular products, hot-rolled sheet, pre-painted steel, among others.

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau's government faces continuing trade tensions with the United States, which hit Canada, the European Union and other nations with tariffs of 25 percent on steel and 10 percent on aluminum this summer. Our position remains clear and firm: "These tariffs are entirely unjustified", Adam Austen, a spokesman for Canadian Minister of Foreign Affairs Chrystia Freeland, said in an e-mail on Thursday.

The government is also requesting that the Canadian International Trade Tribunal conduct an inquiry to determine whether long-term measures are warranted.

The exemption applies on a case-by-case basis to companies that applied for it, and pertains to American steel, aluminum and certain other products.

"Provisional safeguards are meant to provide Canadian steel producers and workers relief from the harm caused by excessive imports of steel products into Canada".
