Tree of Life synagogue massacre is 'our city's darkest day'

A man suspected of killing 11 people in a synagogue in Pittsburgh has been charged with murder - in what is believed to be the worst anti-Semitic attack in recent United States history.

Eleven people lost their lives and several others were injured, including four police officers.

The affidavit said a tactical team found Bowers on the third floor of the synagogue, where he shot two other officers.

Bowers, who was in fair condition at a hospital, was charged late Saturday with 29 federal counts, including hate crimes and weapons offenses. It wasn't clear whether he had an attorney to speak on his behalf.

This is the kind of attack-no, these are the kinds of attack-that call for the strongest, most powerful, most unequivocal unity of all those who face racist, anti-Semitic, xenophobic, Islamophobic, homophobic, misogynistic, transphobic violence, a unity to bring down the forces of white supremacy and hate.

President Donald Trump described the attack as a "wicked act of mass murder".

Trump said he would travel to Pittsburgh to express his condolences.

Mr. Brady said Mr. Bowers entered the synagogue at 9:50 a.m. armed with three Glock.357 handguns and an AR-15 rifle. Law enforcement could need up to a week to fully examine the crime scene, he said.

Bowers will make his first court appearance at 1.30pm on Monday at the Joseph F. Weis, Jr.

National Director of the Anti-Defamation League Jonathan Greenblatt appeared on Meet the Press following the horrific attack on a synagogue on Saturday. "So they do not lock the door, and anybody can just walk in", said Marilyn Honigsberg, administrative assistant for New Light.

Little else was known about the suspect, who had no apparent criminal record but who is believed to have expressed virulently anti-Semitic views on social media. He posted virulent anti-Semitic messages on social media filled with slurs and conspiracy theories.

Using a slur for Jews, he said, "There is no #MAGA, as long as there is a k-- infestation".

Synagogue gunman said he wanted all Jews to die
But for many in Squirrel Hill, and probably across the country, this is more than just tragedy coming to a small, close community. Mr Trump told reporters later that the killings might have been prevented if there had been an armed guard in the building.

Gab confirmed Bowers had a profile on its website, which is popular with far-right extremists.

People light candles Sunday, Oct. 28, 2018, before a vigil in Chicago's Federal Plaza in memory of victims in the Tree of Life synagogue mass shooting in Pittsburgh and other victims of violence.

During the attack and subsequent firefight with officers, Bowers repeatedly stated his desire to kill Jewish people and made comments about genocide, according to the Justice Department charging document, including, "They're committing genocide to my people. Screw your optics, I'm going in", he wrote.

HIAS is a nonprofit group that helps refugees around the world find safety and freedom. It was the deadliest attack on Jews in USA history, according to the leader of the Anti-Defamation League.

The landmark Eiffel Tower in Paris went dark on Sunday night as a tribute to those killed in a shooting at a Pittsburgh synagogue.

"While these attacks are nothing new in the history of our people, what is new is our ability to fight back against the anti-Semites", he said.

In Ottawa, more than 300 people packed into the Soloway Jewish Community Centre for a Sunday evening memorial service, lining the walls and taking every available chair - except 11, left vacant on the stage, each bearing the name of one of the victims. And the Rev. Michael Pfleger, of St. Sabina Church, said that, "when we stand up and when we unite together across all faith lines and race lines, when we do that, we will win". "And we all pray for the speedy recovery of the wounded". One of them was discharged on Saturday and another one will be released later on Sunday. A chant of "vote, vote, vote" broke out during the emotional gathering.

Mr Trump, who branded Saturday's shooting an act of pure evil and called on Americans to rise above hatred, was already facing similar criticism after pipe bombs were mailed last week to some of his most prominent political adversaries.

While Pennsylvania has the death penalty, it seldom enforces it.

David Rosenthal, 54, (brother of Cecil), of Squirrel Hill. The larger one, Tree of Life, was set up in 1864. Among its treasures is a "Holocaust Torah", rescued from Czechoslovakia.

Police also raced to synagogues in Washington, New York City, Chicago and Los Angeles to provide additional security.

"It isn't what you say after the tragedy that only matters", he said.
