Tree of Life synagogue massacre is 'our city's darkest day'

A man suspected of killing 11 people in a synagogue in Pittsburgh has been charged with murder - in what is believed to be the worst anti-Semitic attack in recent United States history.

Eleven people lost their lives and several others were injured, including four police officers.

The affidavit said a tactical team found Bowers on the third floor of the synagogue, where he shot two other officers.

Bowers, who was in fair condition at a hospital, was charged late Saturday with 29 federal counts, including hate crimes and weapons offenses. It wasn't clear whether he had an attorney to speak on his behalf.

This is the kind of attack-no, these are the kinds of attack-that call for the strongest, most powerful, most unequivocal unity of all those who face racist, anti-Semitic, xenophobic, Islamophobic, homophobic, misogynistic, transphobic violence, a unity to bring down the forces of white supremacy and hate.

President Donald Trump described the attack as a "wicked act of mass murder".

Trump said he would travel to Pittsburgh to express his condolences.

Mr. Brady said Mr. Bowers entered the synagogue at 9:50 a.m. armed with three Glock.357 handguns and an AR-15 rifle. Law enforcement could need up to a week to fully examine the crime scene, he said.

Bowers will make his first court appearance at 1.30pm on Monday at the Joseph F. Weis, Jr.

National Director of the Anti-Defamation League Jonathan Greenblatt appeared on Meet the Press following the horrific attack on a synagogue on Saturday. "So they do not lock the door, and anybody can just walk in", said Marilyn Honigsberg, administrative assistant for New Light.

Little else was known about the suspect, who had no apparent criminal record but who is believed to have expressed virulently anti-Semitic views on social media. He posted virulent anti-Semitic messages on social media filled with slurs and conspiracy theories.

Using a slur for Jews, he said, "There is no #MAGA, as long as there is a k-- infestation".

During the attack and subsequent firefight with officers, Bowers repeatedly stated his desire to kill Jewish people and made comments about genocide, according to the Justice Department charging document, including, "They're committing genocide to my people. Screw your optics, I'm going in", he wrote.
