Bolton said at the press conference later on today that his meetings with Prime Minister Mamuka Bakhtadze, Foreign Minister Davit Zalkaliani, Defense Minister Levan Izoria and Interior Minister Giorgi Gakharia were "very positive and very productive".

Trump was criticized at his first summit with Putin in Finland.

"The fact was that the outcome would have been the same by all the evidence we have", said Bolton after his talks with Russian President Vladimir Putin and his top lieutenants.

Trump and Putin have held a summit in July in Helsinki, Finland which was touted to be a "great success" by the United States president. But that was postponed after Trump faced allegations of cozying up to the Kremlin.

Putin was last invited for an official engagement on American soil in 2015 - when Barack Obama had arranged bilateral talks with him on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly. Russian Federation had, in July, marked its dissent after President Donald Trump rescinded the invitation to Putin for a joint summit.

In the wake of the summit, Trump was widely criticized for failing to publicly denounce Russia's interference in the 2016 US election and appearing to accept Putin's denials of such activity.

The topic of Putin visiting the United States is a highly-charged one, because USA intelligence agencies allege that Russian Federation interfered in the 2016 presidential election to help Trump win.

Putin and Trump are due to meet briefly in Paris next month, when they attend a centennial memorial service for Armistice Day, which marked the end of WW1.

"It will be helpful if they (the Russians) stop interfering in our election ... get out of Crimea and the Donbass in Ukraine ... stop using illegal chemical weapons to conduct assassination attempts against Russian exiles in the West, and if they would be less intrusive in the Middle East", he said.

Russian foreign minister Sergei Lavrov had a call with USA secretary of state Mike Pompeo to discuss "acute issues on the global agenda, and bilateral ties in the context of preparations for planned contacts between the presidents", the Russian foreign ministry said in a statement.
