Police say the bus' lights were flashing and its stop arm was extended.

A vehicle traveling in the opposite direction hit and killed the students.

Three elementary school-aged children were killed and one child was seriously injured when they were hit at a school bus stop in Rochester Tuesday morning. Tony Slocum said four children were preparing to board a Tippecanoe Valley School Corp. bus at about 7 a.m. Tuesday when they were hit by the pickup truck on a two-lane road near Rochester, about 100 miles north of Indianapolis.

Just last week, a 16-year-old Decatur High School student was hit when a vehicle drove around the school bus he was boarding. Right now, school buses have been back on the roads for a few months and police warn drivers can become complacent. Shepherd was being held at Fulton County Jail, with a surety bond of $15,000, state police said.

"Other than that, if you see a school bus with the red lights on and the stop arm out, everybody is required to stop", said Perrine.

Shepherd of Rochester stayed at the scene and has been cooperating with police, said Slocum.

The incident happened within the Tippecanoe Valley School Corporation district, which serves both Fulton and Kosciusko Counties.

'Our school corporation has suffered a tragedy this morning. One child was airlifted to a hospital in Fort Wayne.

The school said it has deployed counselors to help staff, students and parents.
