WWE's Roman Reigns, aka Leati Joseph Anoa'i, kicked of Monday night's episode of RAW by announcing his battle with cancer (leukemia) has returned.

If you're a regular reader of this blog, there's a good chance you see professional wrestling the way I often do - as a chance to escape real life and live in a fantasy world for a little while.

"The reality is my real name is Joe, and I've been living with leukemia for 11 years", he said. The show began with Roman Reigns entering the ring without wearing his Shield gear and took his time in settling down, before delivering the emotional speech.

Reigns has not been the most popular WWE star, in part because many fans have felt that his rise to prominence was pushed on them by the company. He had no money, no home, and a new baby. But I'm not gonna lie, that was the hardest time of my life.

Anoa'i, who played football at Georgia Tech, has appeared in the last four main events at WrestleMania.

Above is backstage video of Reigns returning to the Gorilla Position after making his announcement.

The Florida native was on his first run as Universal Champion.

Man verbally abuses black woman on Ryanair flight, sparks outrage
A video showing a white man hurling racial slurs and swearing at an elderly black woman for sitting next to him has gone viral. Although, how a British police force is meant to investigate an incident which happened in Spain isn't entirely understood.

"When I come back it's not going to be about titles and being on top it's going to be about a goal", he said. "The team that gave me a chance was WWE". The vacant title will be decided at WWE Crown Jewel with the Braun Strowman vs. Brock Lesnar singles match on November 2 in Saudi Arabia.

Reigns assured the crowd that it was by no means a "retirement speech" and that he would be back once "I'm done whipping leukaemia's ass". Roman Reigns, in street clothes, entered the ring and announced that he had been battling leukemia for the past eleven years after being diagnosed at the age of 22.

"When I do it's not going to be just about titles or being on top".

The WWE later sent out a news release with a few additional details on Anoa'i's condition.

Dean Ambrose shocked the WWE Universe on Monday night as he viciously beat down Seth Rollins in the closing moments of Raw.
