Twenty five people, including five children, were killed after a bus fell into a canal in south Karnataka on Saturday afternoon.

The bus, which had around 32 passengers on board, fell into the Visvesvaraya Canal, running alongside the road, when the driver of the bus lost control while speeding.

Locals said that the VC canal has been filled to the brim with the release of water by authorities.

"That is the latest report", said Deputy Chief Minister G Parameshwara, expressing grief over the tragedy.

A police officer at the scene told AFP that numerous victims were school children returning to their homes.

Karnataka chief minister H.D.Kumaraswamy cancelled all engagements and left for the spot.

Mandya is a town located 105km from the city of Bengalaru, located the south of the country.

"I believe the driver was not driving properly, I will find out, take some more inputs".

Prime Minister Narendra Modi condoled the deaths. "May God give them strength in this hour of sadness", he tweeted. "I extend my deepest condolences to the families of the deceased & pray for the speedy recovery of the injured", Congress president Rahul Gandhi wrote. Also, he has directed to postpone the state film award ceremony scheduled this evening.
