The death toll is high as it is a Friday and people would have gathered at the Mosque for prayers.

The base is located in eastern Khost province, a stronghold of the Haqqani-linked Taliban group.

A bomb exploded during Friday prayers in a mosque packed with army troops in Afghanistan's southeastern Khost province, killing at least 27 of them, a government spokesman said.

There was no immediate claim of responsibility for the blast, which follows a wave of deadly attacks across Afghanistan in recent weeks as militants step up assaults amid a flurry of diplomatic efforts to end the 17-year conflict.

Provincial public health director Gul Ahmad Shah confirmed 44 wounded had been taken to the Khost city public hospital.

The blast comes just days after more than 50 people were killed when a suicide bomber struck a gathering in Kabul of religious leaders, scholars and worshippers of the Sufi sect of Islam to mark the Prophet Mohammed's birthday.

President Ashraf Ghani condemned the attack in a statement as "anti-Islamic and inhumane".

Abdullah said it still wasn't clear whether the attack was carried out by a suicide bomber or whether a remotely detonated devise was used.

Afghan special forces called in a North Atlantic Treaty Organisation airstrike during an operation Wednesday against the Taliban in eastern Logar province.
