Abrams Preparing New Challenge in Georgia Race 16 November 2018

Abrams is trailing Brian Kemp, but the Democrat is pushing for a new election amid charges of fraud and voting irregularities.

The current round of vote counting in Georgia and recounting in Florida will formally conclude in the next few days-as deadlines fall for various ballot categories, followed by reporting deadlines of those county totals to state officials. The former state lawmaker became a national political celebrity with her bid to become the first black woman in American history to be elected governor.

"We believe that Brian Kemp mismanaged this election to sway it in his favour", said Ms Abrams's campaign manager Lauren Groh-Wargo, surrounded by Democratic lawmakers at the Georgia Capitol.

Abrams's top advisers are working with almost three-dozen lawyers to jump-start the legal action, according to a report by The Associated Presson Friday.

Abrams' dramatic speech capped a hard day for Democrats. "Because concession means to acknowledge an act is right, true or proper", she said. "I can not concede that".

Stacey Abrams is not afraid to stand up to Trump and stand up for Latino communities.

The close outcome - with Kemp avoiding a runoff by about 18,000 votes out of the almost 4 million that were cast - only fanned the complaints, with Democrats questioning his integrity and management of the balloting, and federal judges ordering changes to some counting procedures and plans.

Cathy Cox, a Democrat who served as secretary of state from 1999 through 2007 and is now the dean of Mercer University's law school, said Georgia law puts a heavy burden on candidates such as Abrams who ask a court to intervene. Had she won, Abrams would have become the first black woman elected to be a state governor in USA history. He also declined to order that provisional ballots cast by voters who went to a precinct in the wrong county be counted.

Abrams didn't take that route. She said she had concluded "the law now allows no further viable remedy".

Kemp called the election over in a statement Friday.

However, NPR reports she will be filing some sort of federal lawsuit against the state of Georgia, albeit one which won't challenge the outcome of this election. Kemp campaign communications director Ryan Mahoney said.

He said: "The election is over and hardworking Georgians are ready to move forward".

While it is viewed as a long-shot, any case that comes before the Georgia Supreme Court is one worth watching, given the precedence that it sets for all future rulings. It's now up to interim secretary of state Robyn Crittenden to certify the state's results.

Kemp stormed to the GOP nomination with ads featuring everything from the candidate cranking a chain saw and jokingly pointing a gun toward a teen male suitor of his daughter, to Kemp's offer to "round up criminal illegals" himself in his pickup truck. He's promised a tax cut and teacher pay raises and pledged to continue Georgia's refusal to expand Medicaid insurance under President Barack Obama's 2010 health care overhaul.

Abrams' address to her supporters essentially concluded her bid for the governor's mansion, the final result of which had been in doubt since Election Day, but she noted that she was not officially conceding the race.

"I acknowledge that former Secretary of State Brian Kemp will be certified as the victor in the 2018 gubernatorial election, but to watch an elected official who claims to represent the people in this state baldly pin his hopes for election on the suppression of the people's democratic right to vote has been truly appalling", Abrams said.
