Activision: "Destiny Is Not Performing As Well As We'd Like"

Destiny 2: Forsaken Failed To Meet Sales Targets

Destiny 2: Forsaken Failed To Meet Sales Targets

"And there is still work to do to fully re-engaged the core Destiny fanbase".

During the call, Activision's President and CEO, Coddy Johnson, explained to investors that "while Forsaken is a high-quality expansion with strong engagement", it did "not achieve" sales expectations. This could be troublesome as although Destiny 2's current microtransactions are relatively unoffensive at the moment we could see a shift to more aggressive tactics.

Activision is intent on finding new ways to monetize the game, presumably in an effort to better its margin moving forward. This statement applies to Destiny and all of Activision's other franchises, Johnson said.

Currently, Destiny 2 players can purchase Silver in exchange for real money and then use that Silver to purchase cosmetics (Bright Engrams, Bundles, etc.).

Although pleased with what Johnson calls a "deeply engaged" player base, Activision is focusing now both on trying to get lapsed players to return to the experience as well as providing incentive to new audiences.

Destiny 2 was released on PlayStation 4 and Xbox One in September past year, with a PC version arriving a month later. The core game was also part the PlayStation Plus free lineup for September 2018. Heck, Destiny 2 was pretty much the top-grossing console game of the month, beating even the mighty Fortnite.

Destiny 2's not exactly in crisis though as the number of monthly active users still grew compared to both the last quarter and the previous year - so it's not as if player numbers are falling. So when you're in, you're deeply engaged. "And it really came out of Activision and Bungie working together to address community concerns post-Destiny 2 holistically-talking to players.it needed a fundamental review of how to offer deeper endgame, greater powers, greater rewards, and engage players".

Destiny 2 Black Armory is the next scheduled content drop for the game, which launches in December.
