Amazon will offer free shipping on holiday purchases

Walmart said it's adding millions more items to its free two-day shipping program, but kept its $35 minimum.

Amazon is following Target and temporarily dropping the minimum amount shoppers need to spend to qualify for free shipping.

Consumers have long heralded Amazon for its free two-day shipping for Prime accounts on eligible items, prompting other big-box retailers such as Target and Walmart to offer free expedited shipping during the holiday season as well.

A few weeks ago, Target announced that it's going to offer customers free 2-day shipping during the holiday season, including Black Friday and Cyber Monday, with absolutely no requirements.

Lowe's closing 31 Canadian stores, 20 stores in US
To catch up, Lowe's has been working to slash costs and boost profits in recent years. Nine store closures are expected across Ontario, including one in Sudbury.

But Amazon early on Monday announced that it'll now offer free shipping with no minimum purchase through the holiday season. Target dropped its minimum purchase amount last week, offering free two-day shipping on hundreds of thousands of items until December 22. Also mentioned was the previous free-delivery threshold on orders larger than $25.

Not only does that make shopping more convenient, helping avoid the potential for orders being pilfered from your porch (those Amazon delivery drones have yet to go mainstream), it also has a couple of environmental benefits.

Amazon's shipping costs have grown rapidly in recent quarters.

USA online retail sales in November and December will rise 14.8 percent, to $124 billion, software maker Adobe said last week in a forecast based on data from 80 of the 100 largest online retailers.
