Former home secretary Amber Rudd is set to return to the cabinet as work and pensions secretary, according to reports. The 55-year-old was a prominent Remain campaigner during the referendum and was seen as a "human shield" for Mrs May after she took office.

Rudd's appointment, confirmed this afternoon (16 November), came a day after McVey resigned the office in protest of the government's draft Brexit agreement. Addressing Tory rebels on Sky News tonight she said: "I would ask them to think again. But I now believe it is time she stepped aside". "I am confident the Prime Minister can survive".

AJ Bell senior analyst Tom Selby says: "Right now domestic pensions policy issues are probably a long way from Amber Rudd's mind as Westminster lurches from on Brexit crisis to another".

"Let me be quite clear, if it comes to a confidence vote, she will have mine".

Ms Rudd quit as home secretary in April amid controversy over her handling of the Windrush controversy. Now Theresa May puts her in the DWP.

And inevitable because she has been a steadfast supporter of Theresa May since stepping down as home secretary, while a good number of her Tory colleagues have rounded on the prime minister over Brexit. "We must come together and remember what we serve who we need to help", said Rudd, former head of the British government in may. In my constituency in Hastings & Ryre it really has transformed lives.

The BBC's Iain Watson said it was a huge job given the controversy surrounding universal credit, the government's flagship welfare reform.

"Amber Rudd resigned because of her mismanagement of #Windrush scandal", she tweeted.

Finally, back to what the Daily Mail calls the tumultuous week of resignations, plotting and vicious personal attacks - and the paper says Mrs May has paid tribute to her husband, Philip, for supporting her through it all.

At the time of the report, Ms Rudd said: "There are elements of this report which just show that, unfortunately, that area of the department did not have a grip on what was going on".

Ms Rudd resigned as Home Secretary earlier in the year following the Windrush scandal, which saw the poor treatment of British workers from Jamaica, Trinidad and Tobago and other islands that arrived in the United Kingdom in 1948 on the ship MV Empire Windrush.
