That honor instead went to Oakland's Bob Melvin, was selected American League Manager of the Year by members of the Baseball Writers Association of America on Tuesday, beating out Cora and fellow finalist Kevin Cash of the Tampa Bay Rays.

Snitker was at the helm for the Braves as Atlanta made it back to the postseason for the first time since 2013.

Snitker received 17 of 30 first-place votes. Melvin won with Oakland in 2012 and took the NL honor with Arizona in 2007. He is the eighth manager to win three or more times and is one shy of the record shared by Bobby Cox and Tony La Russa.

The A's, who started the season with a $68.6 million payroll, won 22 more games this season than last. The organization went into a rebuilding mode and wasn't expected to seriously compete in 2018, but a breakout season from NL Rookie of the Year Ronald Acuña Jr. and Mike Foltynewicz, as well as great seasons from Freddie Freeman, Nick Markakis, Arodys Vizcaino, and Aníbal Sánchez - among others - helped the Braves challenge in the NL East ahead of schedule. He was managing at Triple-A Gwinnett when took over Atlanta in May 2016 after Fredi Gonzalez was sacked for a 9-28 start.

A 63-year-old baseball lifer, Snitker became the Braves' interim manager when Fredi Gonzalez was sacked in May 2016, and Snitker was given the job full-time after the season.
