Air Force's 22-year-old falcon mascot, Aurora, is reportedly suffering from "potentially life-threatening injuries" due to a West Point prank, according to The Gazette.

The academy said Sunday in a statement that an apology was given to the Air Force Academy and that an investigation is underway. The development is "an extremely good sign", Bunko said, adding that the academy is "grateful for the outpouring of support and optimistic for Aurora's recovery".

According to The Gazette - which learned of the incident from an Air Force official speaking on condition of anonymity - West Point cadets removed the gyrfalcon from a colonel's home as part of Army-Air Force prank week.

Suspect arrested for scrawling 'Kill all Jews' in synagogue
Police arrested a suspected arsonist in the setting of fires and writing anti-Semitic graffiti in Brooklyn, New York . According to police, the culprit also drew the Puerto Rican flag and wrote 'Free PR'.

The bird was being brought back to Colorado Springs Saturday afternoon on the football team's charter flight, Air Force associate athletic director for communications Troy Garnhart said.

Officials at West Point did not immediately return an email from the Associated Press seeking comment. "We are taking this situation very seriously, and this occurrence does not reflect the Army or (United States Military Academy) core values of dignity and respect", it said. Falcons in captivity tend to live about 25 years, according to the Teton Raptor Center in Wilson, Wyo.
