Bank Of England Wants A Scientist On £50 Banknote

The Bank of England told the public to "think science" when nominating new faces for the £50 note this morning.

Bank of England Governor Mark Carney speaks during the Bank of England's financial stability report at the Bank of England in central London on November 28, 2017.

The text of the announcement says it wants a "historical character" on the notes, however, and the actual nomination form is where you have to say if your choice of the only scientist you can remember is dead or not; which strongly implies they want someone who only exists in black and white line drawing format and can therefore be easily pasted in.

The 50 pound note is the BoE's highest-value banknote and is rarely used in daily transactions.

The roll-out date of the note to replace the current one featuring industrial revolution pioneers Matthew Boulton and James Watt is yet to be revealed. Carney will make the final decision, with the winning figure and concept design to be announced in 2019.

Under Carney, the BoE has introduced plastic or "polymer" banknotes which were common in his native Canada.

Motorola One launches in the U.S. on November 11th for $399
There's still a small chin here sporting the renewed motorola branding - that's right, folks, this is a Motorola One , not a Moto. Android One phones are guaranteed three years of monthly security patches, providing some peace of mind to security-minded users.

The victor will be announced next summer, although the new polymer note will not go into circulation until 2020 at the earliest. The redesign is part of the bank's ongoing switch from paper to polymer notes, which are more durable and harder to counterfeit.

There are now 330 million 50 pound notes in circulation with a combined value of 16.5 billion pounds (21.5 billion dollars).

The scientist will feature on the other side of the note to the Queen, who can be the only living person on bank notes. The face of 19th century novelist Jane Austen graces a 10-pound note launched previous year.

A scientist or mathematician - but not an economist - will feature on Britain's next 50 pound banknote following a six-week period starting on Friday in which the public are invited to propose candidates.

Britons have until December 14 to submit suggestions to the BoE, and Carney will announce the successful design in the middle of next year based on a shortlist by BoE staff and four scientists.
