Shooting at New Jersey mall sparks chaos on Black Friday

City of Elizabeth Spokeswoman Kelly Martins says the man was shot Friday night at The Mills at Jersey Gardens.

Images on social media show shoppers racing from the mall. Some took to Twitter to say they thought they were under attack by an active shooter.

A person was shot in the wrist at a mall in New Jersey on Black Friday, according to a police source and the mayor.

"It was an isolated incident", Lieutenant Todd Kelly of the Elizabeth Police Department told AFP.

"No suspect has been apprehended and the victim is not cooperating on identifying the suspect".

The mall has been evacuated.

Disputes between shoppers scouring for bargains on Black Friday often result in violence.

Simon Malls, the owner of Jersey Garden Malls, released a statement that says in part, "We are committed to providing a safe and secure shopping environment for our shoppers, retailers and employees".

Tweeting pictures from the scene, he said: "Everyone is being evacuated and there are some still too afraid to leave the stores".

The mall has reopened at 10 a.m. on Saturday.
