California Wildfires Now Deadliest In State History As Fatalities Rise

Wind respite may help Southern California wildfire fight

"It was just a wall of fire on each side of us, and we could hardly see the road in front of us", police officer Mark Bass said.

Five of the dead panicked when they couldn't escape by vehicle because their route was cut off by a wall of fire, said Gabriel Fallon, who rode out the blaze with his parents to care for the horses, cows and livestock on their 10-acre farm in Paradise. Question is, where do you go?

Honea added that he's hopeful that more of those missing people will be found. "I didn't know if I was going to die". "I'm just fit to be tied". The fire was not a complete surprise, he said.

Firefighters worked to protect thousands of students and staff sheltering in place at Pepperdine University on Saturday as flames started reaching the campus overnight, school officials said. The fire crossed USA 101 a few miles east of Thousand Oaks - the site of Wednesday night's bar shooting - and was headed south to the Pacific coast, in the direction of Malibu Creek State Park and Malibu city, the Los Angeles County Fire Department said. And in Malibu, mandatory evacuations were ordered for the entire city, where about 12,000 people live, and is known for celebrity beachside homes. The howling Santa Ana winds fueled the Woolsey Fire. The flames turned what it touched to ash as it forced a citywide Malibu evacuation and sent residents scrambling to find a way out of the burn area.

The first fire started Thursday near Townsend oaks 40 miles (64 km) Northwest of Los Angeles. The fire reportedly jumped Pacific Coast Highway about 10 p.m. Friday, moving toward Malibu Colony. It killed eight people in July and August and burned about 1,100 homes. Conditions in the area have hampered the investigation.

The company said it later noticed damage to a transmission tower near the town. The Woolsey Fire has torched about 35,000 acres while the Hill Fire was 4,531 acres.

The entire coastal enclave of Malibu also was ordered to flee, with Lady Gaga, Kim Kardashian West and Guillermo del Toro among the celebrities forced to abandon their homes.

Firefighters battling the Camp Fire with shovels and bulldozers, flame retardants and hoses expected wind gusts up to 40 miles per hour (64 kph) overnight Sunday.

Osby said losses to homes were significant but did not say how many had burned.

The flames destroyed hundreds of homes, a hospital, a gas station, several restaurants and numerous vehicles, officials said. Firefighters carried people from homes and put them in empty seats of their neighbours' cars, said Carol Napoli, 74.

In addition to homes destroyed, Paramount Ranch's "Western Town", a landmark film location dating back to 1927 that included a jail, hotel and saloon, burned to the ground.

Deepika Padukone and Ranveer Singh Wedding
Katrina Kaif and Varun Dhawan , who recently made an appearance on Karan Johar 's talk show recently opened up about it. Last month, they announced their wedding on social media. "Lots of love, Deepika and Ranveer", read the statement.

Firefighters pleaded with people to heed mandatory evacuation orders.

Almost the entire city of 27,000 residents lay in ruins and most were still barred from returning to the still hazardous town where small fires continued to flare.

Lyft is offering free rides to people in the areas.

The Humane Society of Ventura County is accepting dogs, cats, horses and other domesticated animals.

Sky News US correspondent Greg Milam, who is in Los Angeles, said: "What's driving this fire is the Santa Ana winds". Early Friday, the whipping winds prevented fire commanders from ordering aerial assaults in the early morning hours.

"Even though the wind has died down, stay on guard", he urged.

More than 2,000 firefighters were deployed to battle the fire. The Woolsey blaze also destroyed the home of "Dr".

Heavy smoke and strong winds hampered visibility for crews on the fire lines and residents trying to evacuate fire zones.

There were shout-outs as well to the firefighters struggling to contain the fires in what were described as especially hard conditions.

The fire prompted the Friday closure of all schools in the Las Virgenes Unified School District in Calabasas, as well as Viewpoint School, Montessori of Calabasas, Montessori of Calabasas Too and Muse School.
