CUPW rotating strike hits Canada Post Scarborough distribution centre - 680 NEWS

According to a release issued by the CUPW, as of Sunday night, 1,400 more employees from the London and Barrie locals joined 1,800 employees across the country participating in the strike action.

Postal workers in Sarnia were among the latest to walk off the job as nation-wide rotating strikes continued Tuesday.

Monday's strike means there will be no mail delivery in Rockwood, Elora, Fergus, Arthur, Belwood or Guelph.

An updated list of locals participating in the rotating strikes can be found on the CUPW website.

"Some letter carriers are working more than 10 hours a day depending on the route and mail volume", he said.

He said CUPW is ratcheting up its walkouts to add pressure on Canada Post in negotiations centering around health and safety concerns, staffing, wages and workloads.

Last week, federal Labour Minister Patty Hajdu appointed Morton Mitchnick, a former chairman of the Ontario Labour Relations Board, to help the two parties resolve their differences. Customers could see delays of several days.

"We don't want to shut down the postal service completely but we do want to make an impact on the employer - they're not being very forthcoming at the bargaining table", said Jarema.

There are also concerns, said Cuda, about workers on rural routes whose pay can be "drastically different" than those working in urban areas.

The union is calling for a national overtime ban for both of its major bargaining units at Canada Post. "The overburdening, the overtime, constantly not being paid properly, it's definitely worth us being out here doing what we're doing", says one picketing postal worker.

Negotiations are continuing while rotating strikes take place.
