Canadian woman, 86, dies a week after plane crash-lands in Guyana

82 Canadians were on board a Toronto-bound Fly Jamaica aircraft that skidded off the runway after a hydraulics failure moments after departing from a Georgetown, Guyana airport on November 9, Global Affairs said previously.

"Our thoughts and sympathies are with the loved ones of the Canadian citizen who passed away in Guyana", said a statement from Global Affairs on Sunday.

"Consular officials are providing consular assistance to the family during this hard time and are in contact with local authorities to gather more information", said Maegan Graveline, spokesperson for Global Affairs Canada.

The woman, Rookhia Kalloo, was identified to Global News by a family member, who also confirmed that she was a Canadian citizen.

According to a local newspaper, Kalloo's family admitted her to hospital earlier in the week after she started acting strangely.

The Boeing 757-200 aircraft was on its way to Toronto after departing from Cheddy Jagan International Airport in Georgetown, Guyana last week.

The plane had to turn around shortly after takeoff because of mechanical issues.

During landing, several of the plane's tires blew out and its right engine became dislodged from its wing.

An airline says it is "investigating" what led to the death of an elderly passenger in the days after the crash landing of a flight she was aboard from Guyana to Toronto.

Global Affairs said at the time that none of the 82 Canadians on board were hurt.

Her daughter reportedly told Stabroek News, a newspaper in Guyana, that Kalloo was behaving oddly in the days that followed, though she had no obvious physical malady.

"According to family members, at the hospital, the doctors said there was swelling of her brain and there was not much that they could do to ease the swelling".

It is believed that Kalloo died on Friday.
