In June, five people died and hundreds of people were infected across 35 USA states after a romaine lettuce-linked E. coli outbreak.

One of those had suffered kidney failure.

The alerts, issued as millions of Americans plan their Thanksgiving Day menus, covered all forms of romaine, including whole heads, hearts, bags, mixes and Caesar salad.

Romaine lettuce has been linked to an outbreak of E. coli in the USA and Canada, health officials say. An additional 18 people were sickened in Canada. Most people recover within a week, but some illnesses can last longer and be more severe.

With frequent news of outbreaks, which are investigated by the CDC, many people might wonder whether foodborne illness is on the rise - and whether safety measures across the nation adequately protect our food supply. The origin of the outbreak is unknown and under investigation.
