The prime minister's woes were intensified by reports that the European Union had rejected her proposal for an "independent mechanism" that could allow the United Kingdom to quit a temporary customs arrangement if Brexit talks collapsed.

An EU diplomat told Reuters earlier on Saturday that they were cautiously hopeful that an EU summit could happen in November to endorse the deal but that the volatile situation in Britain made it very hard to predict.

DUP and Conservative Brexiteer MPs came together yesterday to step up pressure on the Prime Minister over her faltering Brexit strategy.

That move fired speculation that more ministers who backed Remain in the referendum campaign could also quit.

Sterling tumbled to a 1-1/2 week low of $1.2838 on fears of a possible no-deal Brexit that many investors fear will weaken the West, panic markets and block the arteries of trade. "So a deal being reached with the European Union still seems the easy part of the equation".

The "backstop" is an insurance policy to ensure no return to border controls on the island of Ireland if a future EU-UK trading relationship can not be agreed in time.

Both sides need an agreement to keep trade flowing between the world's biggest trading bloc and the fifth largest national economy.

May had been expected to hold a vote in parliament on her deal before the end of the year.

In Brussels, the EU's chief Brexit negotiator Michel Barnier told ministers from the other 27 European Union member states that he was waiting for a signal that May has mustered enough votes to get a deal approved by parliament.

He lunged at them repeatedly with a knife. "I threw the trolley straight at him, and I got him". Footage shows the security guard was stabbed in the neck.

Ireland's Foreign Minister Simon Coveney says Brexit negotiations have reached "a very critical and sensitive stage".

If there is a breakthrough, a Brexit summit could be called for November 24-25.

"There is not going to be one", a Government source said.

In view of analysts at Deutsche Bank, Brexit feels like its entering a crucial stretch and Friday was a bad day for the United Kingdom government with the weekend headlines not offering much additional joy.

Pro-Remain MP Jo Johnson resigned as transport minister on Friday over May's handling of Brexit talks, accusing the prime minister of leading Britain to a "boundless transitional period".

But by also voting against the prospect of a no-deal Brexit, parliament would open up the possibility of a new referendum based on three choices, Greening said - voting for May's deal, exiting without a deal or staying in the EU.

The EU is not now working to include any second referendum in its Brexit planning, sources in Brussels said.

'This deal, when it comes, must be thrown out wholesale.
