UK 15 children and six adults found in refrigerated lorry that arrived from France says report

The group were hidden among cases of sparkling water being brought into the port of Newhaven.

An East Sussex County Council spokesman said: "We can confirm that 15 young people were transferred to our care by colleagues from Border Force and the Police on Thursday last week, having been found in a lorry in Newhaven". The case illustrates the problems border authorities have with migrants who claim to be children in the hope of getting sympathetic treatment. Interviews and age assessments later established that 11 were aged under 18.

A Romanian man believed to be the driver was arrested and charged with assisting unlawful entry to the UK.

A criminal investigation into the circumstances of their arrival was under way.

Identified as Andrut Duma, 29, he was made to appear before the magistrates on Saturday, 2 November, on charges of immigration offences and was remanded to police custody till 26 November, when a hearing at Lewes Crown Court will take place.
