China unveils AI news presenter

Watch this creepy AI anchor talk like a real person

This is my very first day in Xinhua News Agency, ' says the presenter in an introductory video.

Dressed in suit and tie, the AI newsreaders can "learn from live broadcast videos and read texts as naturally as a professional news anchor", according to Xinhua.

At first glance, the "anchor" appears to be an ordinary looking man, with the voice, facial expressions and movements of a real person.

China's state-run Xinhua News Agency unveiled a deeply creepy artificial intelligence news anchor on Wednesday at the government's World Internet Conference tech expo.

Xinhua said that together with other anchors, "He" will bring you authoritative, timely and accurate news information in Chinese and English.

The anchors are now available through Xinhua's distribution platforms, including its official Chinese and English apps, WeChat public account, online TV webpage, and two Weibo accounts. Since it's an AI anchor, news is read out in a very monotonous manner with no expressions in between.

Democrats fight for House control; GOP's Braun wins Indiana
What does this tell us moving forward? The Democratic candidate was leading in seven races and the Republican was ahead in 10. Democrats last controlled the governorship and both chambers of the Legislature in 2008, during the administration of Gov.

Xinhua built the AI with China's Sogou search engine and stated in a report that it will allow the news agency to have 24-hour news coverage while cutting down on production costs.

This is different from using a 3D digital model of a human.

Michael Wooldridge, a Professor at the University of Oxford, said the result is mixed.

"It's quite hard to watch for more than a few minutes", University of Oxford Professor Michael Wooldridge told the BBC. In a country where the press is heavily censored, one wonders if China has more ambitious plans to roll out more virtual news anchors, replacing human ones who might not always toe the party line.

"We will see it improve over time", he told the outlet.
