E. coli outbreak in romaine lettuce prompts nationwide warning from CDC

CDC officials are investigating the cause of an E. coli outbreak that has infected 32 people in 11 states.

Health experts with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention are now advising that consumers should not eat any romaine lettuce, and said retailers and restaurants should not serve it, after 32 people became ill from E. coli between October 8 and October 31. One of the hospitalized people developed hemolytic uremic syndrome, a potentially life-threatening form of kidney failure. No deaths have been reported.

If you have any romaine lettuce at home, you should throw it away, even if you have eaten some and did not get sick, the CDC cautioned.

"If you do not know if the lettuce is romaine or whether a salad mix contains romaine, do not eat it and throw it away", the CDC said. As of Tuesday, the grower, supplier, distributor and brand of the infected lettuce is not known, the CDC said.

The government agency issued an alert Tuesday afternoon explaining that as of November 20, there have been 18 confirmed cases of the illness - three in Ontario and 15 in Quebec.

Epidemiologic evidence from the United States and Canada indicates that romaine lettuce is a likely source of the outbreak.

The specific strain detected in the current outbreak is related to a strain that infected people in 2017 in the US and Canada, the CDC said.

Symptoms of E. coli infection, which typically begin three to four days after the bacteria is ingested, include severe stomach cramps, diarrhea and vomiting.

In the case a consumer was unsure if a salad mix had romaine in it, the CDC urged consumers to toss it to be safe-and further recommended cleaning and sanitizing any space where romaine lettuce had been stored.
