DOJ Says Acting AG Matthew Whitaker Is Now Overseeing Robert Mueller's Probe

BREAKING Attorney General Jeff Sessions resigns at President Trump’s request

BREAKING Attorney General Jeff Sessions resigns at President Trump’s request

Whitaker was Sessions' Chief of Staff and, before that, an attorney with conservative watchdog group Foundation for Accountability and Civic Trust (FACT).

Sessions, a former U.S. senator for Alabama, was one of the earliest supporters of, but nearly immediately ran into controversy in the new administration.

The top Democrat on the House Judiciary Committee says he wants "answers immediately" after Jeff Sessions was forced out as attorney general by President Donald Trump.

According to a copy of the resignation letter, Sessions was asked by Trump to resign.

Sessions' resignation letter has been delivered to White House chief of staff John Kelly.

Despite this warning, Romero was far from upset about Sessions' exit, calling him "the worst attorney general in modern American history".

Sessions was the first sitting senator to endorse Trump's 2016 presidential campaign, becoming one of his closest national security advisers.

The Chilean forward would go on to play 56 minutes in his new position before being moved to the wing. United have won those two games and are now unbeaten in their last four in the Premier League.

Whitaker, who may now inherit Robert Mueller's Russian Federation probe from deputy attorney general Rod Rosenstein, has written in a CNN op-ed that the inquiry into the Trump campaign is "going too far".

Unusual inherited Sessions's Senate seat after his appointment as U.S. Attorney General. He will serve our Country well ... "It's very sad", Trump said during a scathing interview with Hill.TV in September.

Mr. Sessions had recused himself from that matter, causing much of the break with Mr. Trump.

Sessions said that he did not think he should lead the investigation since he had been a Trump campaign surrogate.

Whitaker already has some experience under his belt: he previously served as USA attorney in Des Moines, Iowa. Trump belittled Sessions but, perhaps following the advice of aides, held off on firing him. With Sessions out, his replacement would be in place to take the reigns in overseeing Special Counsel Robert Mueller's investigation.

UPDATE: NBC's Pete Williams reports that Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein will cease oversight of the Mueller investigation and Whitaker is expected to step-in, but he can only fire Mueller "for cause".
