He also rejected claims that Mars could become an "escape hatch" for the rich when the Earth's resources are depleted or global warming makes the planet near uninhabitable, saying that early missions would be incredibly unsafe, likening it to climbing Mount Everest.

Should he succeed in landing on Mars, he expects to work "non-stop to build the base".

"We think you can come back but we're not sure", Musk added. As with climbing Everest, Musk believes it's all about the "challenge".

The ramp-up in Model 3 production took a far heavier toll on both Tesla ($TSLA) and his own well-being than Musk said he had anticipated. "Now, does that sound like an escape hatch for rich people?"

"It's going to be hard, there's a good chance of death ーgoing in a little can through deep space, you might land successfully", he said.

He was overwhelmed by Coric's deep groundstrokes in the first set, dropping 14 consecutive points at one point to trail 4-0. He played out the rest of the contest, but Cilic clinched the victory with an overhead victor on match point.

"And even after doing all this, it's a very harsh environment", he said.

Tickets for the trip would cost "around a couple hundred thousand dollars", according to Musk.

The billionaire tech mogul admitted it's likely he'll live on the red planet eventually, and though there's a "good chance" of dying on the way. The privately held company is now valued at somewhere around $28 billion (although its latest effort to secure what turned out to be a $250 million loan sparked controversy).

Musk's spaceship designed for interplanetary travel "Starship" (formerly known as the BFR) is a fully reusable vehicle created to take humans and supplies to Mars and also to dramatically cut travel time within Earth. So ... there's a good chance you die there. Even with all that technology, the chances of success aren't 100 percent: One need only look at the Mars Polar Lander crash of 1999 to see what could go wrong.

"We've recently made a number of breakthroughs that I am just really fired up about", Musk was quoted as saying in an interview with Axios on HBO on Sunday, the CNET reported. "But everything has to go perfectly, and Mars could always throw us a curveball".
