Update Pipe Bomb Suspect Charged with Using Weapon of Mass Destruction

The charges carry a maximum sentence of life in prison.

Authorities said he sent improvised explosive devices to Democrats, critics of Trump and CNN. The scare heightened tensions before the crucial midterm elections, but he was arrested within days.

Before the indictment, Sayoc had been accused in a criminal complaint that included five federal charges, including illegal mailing of explosives and making threats against former US presidents and others. Sayoc was also accused of threatening his intended targets and violating federal law by mailing the devices through the U.S. Postal Service.

The charges said he aimed to "kill, injure and intimidate an individual and unlawfully to damage and destroy a building, vehicle, and other real and person property".

None of the devices exploded.

A lawyer for Sayoc had no comment.

Sayoc appeared in NY earlier this week. He is being held without bail.

‘Westworld’ Location at Paramount Ranch Burns Down
One of the L.A. area's most famous movie locations has become a casualty of the destructive wildfires raging across the region. HBO said it did not know the extent of the damage and expressed concern for "all those affected by these disgusting fires".

Sayoc was ultimately arrested on October 26th in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, thanks to forensic evidence recovered by the Federal Bureau of Investigation on 11 of the bombs. He had been living in a van covered with stickers of Trump and showing images of some Trump opponents with crosshairs over their faces.

According to the indictment, targeted victims, including Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton, former CIA Director John Brennan and former Director of National Intelligence James Clapper, also received a photograph of themselves with a red "X" on it.

Sayoc was arrested by federal investigators in the South Florida town of Plantation last month after fingerprints and DNA evidence led to a trackdown by the FBI.

Update 10/26/2018: The Feds arrested a Florida man on Friday (October 26) in connection with the pipe bomb packages sent to the Obamas, the Clintons, Joe Biden, Robert De Niro, and CNN.

"Cesar Sayoc allegedly targeted former high-ranking officials such as President Barack Obama, President Bill Clinton, Vice President Joe Biden, Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, and others, as well as CNN, by sending explosive packages to them through the U.S. Postal Service", said Geoffrey Berman, U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of NY.

The case was randomly assigned to U.S. District Judge Jed S. Rakoff.
