Boeing jet crash-lands at Guyana airport 6 people injured

Six passengers suffered non-life-threatening injuries.

The Fly Jamaica Airways jet took off from Guyana around 2:10 a.m. local time with 118 people, along with two infants, and eight crew members on board.

After encountering hydraulical problems, the pilots chose to return to Georgetown Cheddi Jagan International Airport approximately 45 minutes after takeoff.

All Canadian passengers aboard a Toronto-bound flight with a mechanical problem escaped injury when their plane skidded off the runway at Guyana's main worldwide airport, federal officials said Friday.

Guyana's Chief Medical Officer, Shamdeo Persaud, said five of the injured had been referred to another hospital for "further investigation" for spinal injuries.

St. Lucia News was reporting that six people were injured in the incident, but were stable and being treated at the Diamond Regional Hospital in Georgetown.

Invor Bedessee was among 82 Canadians on Fly Jamaica flight OJ256, which experienced a hydraulics failure moments after departing from Georgetown, Guyana.

After several minutes in the air, the flight destined for Canada, turned back due to technical difficulties and crash-landed.

"If we had 10 more feet, we would be down in the cliff, down in the ditch".

Fly Jamaica said the airline is now making arrangements to fly the plane's passengers out of Guyana.

On landing at 2:53 AM, the emergency services were activated and since then an investigator from the Guyana Civil Aviation Authority has taken responsibility for the crash site. Boeing is also looking into the incident, a spokesman said. The Public Infrastructure Minister said the United States' National Transportation Safety Board has been informed.

Global Affairs said none of the Canadians on board sustained injuries, adding that consular assistance was available to anyone needing it.
