In a series of morning tweets, Trump said it is "ridiculously unfair" for the United States to spend "massive amounts" of money on troops in Europe while experiencing "nothing but Trade Deficits and Losses" with the same counties that host the US military. Trump, landing in France on Friday, called the idea "insulting" and referred again to the U.S' North Atlantic Treaty Organisation burden.

Mr Macron's office added the 40-year-old leader had made his points about a European army and European defence very clear to Mr Trump during a meeting on Saturday in Paris, adding that "the Americans left feeling reassured".

"MAKE FRANCE GREAT AGAIN!" he added.

In an eagerly awaited speech on the future of Europe before what she called "the biggest democratic parliament of the world", German Chancellor Angela Merkel called on Tuesday (13 November) for a "real, true European army" and a common asylum framework.

"You look so comfortable up there under shelter as we're getting drenched", Trump said, drawing laughter from the crowd.

Kathryn Statler, a history professor at the University of San Diego who is writing a book on US-France relations, also told the Boston Globe: "If it hadn't been for France, the United States would not exist". "Patriotism is the exact opposite of nationalism: nationalism is treason", the French president verbally stated and reiterated in a tweet.

Trump also launched on attack on the French president over this call for a European army, a proposal the USA leader earlier had dubbed "insulting".

Trump also complained today about tariffs on USA wines sold in France, saying it's "not fair, must change!"

Trump suggested Macron might have been trying to divert attention from his low popularity ratings and problems at home.

Macron's office offered no comment on Trump's criticism. Not fair, must change!

The president also criticized a number of issues facing France and the United States, including wine tariffs and military spending.

Trump, a former businessman, opened a winery in Charlottesville, Virginia, in 2011.

The US President then continued the onslaught against Macron in a series of tweets in which he slated his approval ratings and praised France's nationalist movement.

Surely, the legacy media will denounce President Trump for his attack on the legitimacy of the elected President of France and his promotion of Macron's nationalist rivals in Paris. But, at the same time, he developed a strong relationship with Trump at a time when many European leaders are keeping a distance.

The complaints were also another marker of the up-and-down relationship Trump has had with Macron since they first met previous year.

The president, who traveled to France to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the end of that conflict tweeted: 'By the way, when the helicopter couldn't fly to the first cemetery in France because of nearly zero visibility, I suggested driving.

As he jetted to Paris last Friday, President Trump received a congratulatory phone call aboard Air Force One.

Tuesday morning, the president went off on the country he just returned from.
