An exchange of gunfire erupted during an Israeli military raid in the Gaza Strip on Sunday, leaving six Palestinians dead including a commander in Hamas's military wing, while potentially dashing hopes that a recent agreement might restore calm. The Palestinian Health Ministry said six people, including at least five militants, were killed and seven others wounded.

Hamas' armed wing, the Qassam Brigades, claimed that Israeli undercover forces in a civilian vehicle infiltrated two miles into Gaza and fatally shot one of its commanders, identified as Nour el-Deen Baraka.

During the pursuit, Israeli aircraft fired more than 40 missiles in the area, witnesses told Reuters.

In Israel, the military said it had intercepted two rockets fired from Gaza.

One Israeli soldier has been killed along the Gaza border in that time.

Multiple alarm sirens have sounded in the Eshkol Regional Council in southern Israel near the Gaza border.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu was updated as Defense Minister Avigdor Liberman conducted security consultations at the army's central base in Tel Aviv.

Hamas has been leading protests since 30 March in a bid to ease an Israeli-Egyptian blockade imposed in 2007 in order to weaken the militant group.

On Friday, Palestinian civil servants began receiving payments after months of sporadic salary disbursements in cash-strapped Gaza, with $15 million delivered into the enclave through Israel in suitcases by Qatar.

Israel says it is defending its border against militant infiltrations, but its army has come under worldwide criticism because of the large number of unarmed protesters who have been shot.

Lieberman said he had opposed "transferring the money to Hamas".

Even his erstwhile allies attacked him for indirectly doing business with a militant group that has fought three wars against Israel and is sworn to Israel's destruction.

The funds were primarily to cover salaries of officials working for Hamas.

Qatar has also said it would hand out $100 to each of 50,000 poor families, as well as larger sums to Palestinians wounded in clashes along the Gaza-Israel border.

In the West Bank, Abbas angrily accused Israel and the United States of ganging up behind his back to entrench Hamas's control over Gaza.
