Authorities said the gunman died inside the bar but would not say how he died. The suspect was later found dead inside the bar.

A neighbour, who would only identify himself by his last name, Mr Hanson, said Long lived with his mother.

Witnesses described a man cloaked in black and wearing glasses as he walked onto a dance floor filled with people. Investigators didn't immediately know how many rounds the magazine could hold, he said. "We have no idea what the motive was at this point".

Ian served in the Marines from 2008 to 2013 and toured Afghanistan, rising to Corporal rank before he left.

The security guard at the bar, who was unarmed, was shot during the incident.

Authorities are investigating reports that the gunman used a smoke bomb but said they had not found anything to support this.

Ventura County Sheriff Geoff Dean said on Thursday that Long was armed with a Glock 21, a.45-caliber handgun created to hold 10 rounds plus one in the chamber. "I love you. I'll talk to you later, "' Dean said.

Long also was the victim of a battery at a local bar in 2015, the sheriff said.

Pepperdine University said some of its students were at the bar, and it's working to identify them.

Novaks said that Helus went into the building with "no idea" what to expect - only knowing he wanted to help those inside.

Long then opened fire inside the bar, where he exchanged shots with Ventura County Sheriff's Sgt. Ron Helus and a California Highway Patrol officer. At least 10 to 15 others were injured.

"Sergeant [Ron Helus] was on the force for 29 years, was looking to retire in the next year or so and has survived by his wife and son", Sheriff Dean said.

"Obviously he had something going on in his head that would cause him to do something like this."

Dean said his officers had several interactions with Long, including an April call to his home.

Civilians and other deputies pulled Sergeant Helus from the bar. "He was totally committed, he gave his all, and tonight, as I told his wife, he died a hero".

"We have no idea if there is a terrorism link or not", Ventura County Sheriff Geoff Dean told reporters.

"Within a split second, everybody yelled 'get down, ' " she said.

"I've been a cop for 41 years and I never thought I've seen the things around the country would happen but I've learned it doesn't matter what community you're in, it doesn't matter how safe your community is, it can happen anywhere", said Sheriff Dean.

Savannah Stafseth, who was outside on the patio when the shooting started, told the LA Times: 'There are no words. I hear chairs being thrown out the window.
