Speculation is mounting that Hillary Clinton could launch a bid for the U.S. presidency in 2020 after two former advisers in as many months floated the idea of a remarkable political comeback.

Not only was Pennsylvania a pivotal state in the 2016 presidential election, Pittsburgh played a big part, with Hillary Clinton receiving 75 percent of the vote.

"True to her name, Mrs. Clinton will fight this out until the last dog dies", the pair wrote.

"She will not allow this humiliating loss at the hands of an amateur to end the story of her career", he wrote in a Wall Street Journal article co-authored by former Democrat politician Andrew Stein.

Ms Clinton would reinvent herself as a liberal firebrand to "easily" capture the Democratic nomination, Mr Penn and Mr Stein predicted. Clinton is struggling to make inroads among young Americans who overwhelmingly supported Bernie Sanders during the Democratic presidential primary, a worrisome sign as she tries to reassemble the coalition that twice propelled Barack Obama into the White House.
