Bob McNair, owner of Houston Texans, dead at 81

McNair is survived by his wife, four children, 15 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Mr. McNair was an unbelievable man who made tremendous contributions to the National Football League and the City of Houston. He formed Houston NFL Holdings in 1998, and on October 6, 1999 he was awarded the 32nd NFL franchise. He also helped bring two Super Bowls to NRG Stadium: Super Bowl XXXVIII (2004) and Super Bowl LI (2017).

McNair was born in Tampa and graduated from SC in 1958 with a bachelor of science degree. From its inception in 1994, Stonerside won 72 Graded Stakes, including the 1997 Belmont Stakes (in partnership with Frank Stronach), and bred the winners of more than $50 million. After several hard building years as an expansion team, they won their first AFC South title and first playoff berth in 2011.

Both McNair and his team flew under the radar during the early part of his ownership tenure, and his influence seemed to be limited to hosting Super Bowls and chairing the league's finance committee. McNair said he would continue as CEO but would delegate more to staff.

"First and foremost, on behalf of the Atlanta Falcons and my family, our thoughts and prayers are with Janice, the entire McNair family and all the Texans fans at this time of tremendous loss". His philanthropic leadership, humanitarian efforts and impact in the community were recognized far and wide with numerous awards and honors.

The McNair name is prominent in Houston especially because of the work he did in the community.

Black Friday shooting at Jersey Gardens Mall leaves 1 man injured
Tweeting pictures from the scene, he said: "Everyone is being evacuated and there are some still too afraid to leave the stores". City of Elizabeth Spokeswoman Kelly Martins says the man was shot Friday night at The Mills at Jersey Gardens .

According to the Texans, throughout his life, McNair and his foundations donated more than $500 million. The Association of Fundraising Professionals honored McNair with the highest recognition given for exceptional generosity and outstanding civic and charitable responsibility.

The couple has been committed to charity in the city, and he was the chairman of The Robert and Janice McNair Foundation, The Robert and Janice McNair Educational Foundation in Forest City, North Carolina, and the Houston Texans Foundation.

He also helped lead the McNair Scholars Program, which recruited physicians and research scientists in the fields of diabetes, cancer and neurosciences.

He and Janice moved to Houston in 1960 and he made his fortune as the founder of Cogen Technologies, an energy company which was sold to Enron in 1999 for $1.5 billion.

Social media was quick to remind folks of this and unlike the other owners who have passed away over the course of the past year, McNair had controversy surrounding his name instead of well wishes to his family.
