Ex-Filipino First Lady Imelda Marcos faces years behind bars

Public officials should see the conviction of Ilocos Norte Representative Imelda Marcos for 7 counts of graft as a reminder that they can be held accountable for abuses, Malacañang said on Friday, November 9.

At the time, Marcos was Minister of Human Settlement and Environment Management, Metro Manila Governor, and a member of the Interim Batasang Pambansa.

Marcos, 89, is the wife of former President Ferdinand Marcos and the mother of Ilocos Norte Governor Imee Marcos and former Senator and vice presidential hopeful Ferdinand "Bongbong" Marcos Jr.

She is now a member of the House of Representatives for Ilocos Norte.

The Sandiganbayan said the former first lady can have provisional liberty if she posts a cash bond while appealing the conviction. But Ombudsman Prosecutor Rey Quilala said she can still run until the Sandiganbayan's decision becomes final and executory.

"Nagkaroon po siya ng financial interests sa mga foundations na ito".

In finding her guilty of graft in seven of the 10 cases filed against her, Mrs. Marcos faces imprisonment of six years and one month up to 11 years for each count, as provided under the Anti-Graft and Corrupt Practices Act.

Marcos was not present at the court but a warrant has now been issued for her arrest. Chairperson Emeritus Etta Rosales said, "This legal victory is a two-decade struggle by the courageous Filipino people. But still, they did not give up and that is what counts".

On the other hand, Marcos was acquitted in three of her other graft charges involving local corporations due to the insufficiency of evidence against her.

Akbayan Partylist have also released statements upon hearing the decision. But, I am not certain Imelda should be jailed.

Presidential Spokesperson Salvador Panelo said Marcos can still avail of other remedies, including asking the Supreme Court for a reversal of the conviction.
