Instagram Has Fixed Its Temporary Outage, Password Problems

The Download Your Data tool Instagram recently launched may have revealed some passwords to the world at large, the company says - though only a few users were affected apparently, and the bug has now been patched. For some users it could have included their password in the URL of the link they've been sent to, um, download their data.

Facebook has been hit with another security bug which exposed passwords of Instagram users. For some reason, these passwords were also stored on Facebook's servers, however the notification said that data has been deleted and the tool was updated so it won't happen now. An Instagram spokesperson has said to The Information that the issue was "discovered internally and affected a very small number of people".

The tech news website reports that Chet Wisniewski, a principal research scientist at security firm Sophos has said that if Instagram were storing passwords with the right encryption technology, this type of flaw shouldn't be possible. "If that's happening, then there are likely much bigger problems than that", he added. Users will be able to download information like photos, videos, comments, and more.

Facebook, which owns Instagram, has come under increased scrutiny in recent months due to a string of security breaches. Passwords of users who accessed the said feature were available in the URL of their web browsers. Instagram lets users download a copy of the data saved in their servers.
