A man from the Midlands has died after an alleged altercation outside a New York City bar.

"On November 22 at 03.37am police responded to reports of an assault outside 4317 Queens Boulevard in the confines of the 108 precinct".

That incident, which occurred shortly before 4am, culminated in the tragic passing of the talented former Fr Manning Gaels footballer.

Police found the man "lying on the ground, with trauma to the head".

In the interim, the NYPD launched an immediate investigation which resulted in a man presenting himself to police earlier today. He was taken to the hospital where he was pronounced dead.

Steven O'Brien, 25, of Sunnyside, has been arrested and charged with assault, according to police.

The Department of Foreign Affairs confirmed they are providing consular assistance to the family of a man who died in the US.
