Ireland head coach Joe Schmidt has announced that he will be making a decision on his coaching future early next week.

Ireland coach Joe Schmidt chats with All Blacks coaches Ian Foster, Steve Hansen, and Scott McLeod in Dublin.

"It's a decision that will probably not be finalised until Sunday, certainly by early next week", said Schmidt.

Andrew Conway's hat-trick steered Ireland to their eight-try victory over the U.S., with the hosts showing 14 changes from the stunning 16-9 win over New Zealand. Schmidt would be one of the leading candidates to replace Hansen as All Blacks coach if he chose to step down, and he said it would be a relief to finally make a decision about his future.

"I'm going to take some time tomorrow because it was a really busy week, we were flat out trying to put this group together". The smart money remains on Schmidt returning to New Zealand, with the All Blacks doubtless keen on his services in the long run. It sounds like Schmidt may end end his incredible tenure with Ireland once his contract up after the 2019 Rugby World Cup.

"To be honest I've beaten myself up enough about this decision". "They are great people to work for", Schmidt said. 'Tadhg has a really instinctive feel for the game; his running lines, his ability to get into the right defensive positions.

Schmidt was quizzed first on whether the decision is any clearer in his mind and he replied by saying he's incredibly lucky to have the IRFU and their patience, in addition to admitting that he has given the governing body an indication of his decision.

Of course, ruining a championship run for the hated rival Wolverines would be a welcome byproduct for the Buckeyes. They are 74th in the country in passing defense in S&P+, and 111th in the nation defensively in passing downs.
