It's a day that has been years in the making.

More than two years after voters in MA approved of recreational marijuana for adults, there are finally places to buy it legally.

A marijuana milestone in MA - the first recreational marijuana stores in the Eastern United States will open Tuesday in Leicester and Northampton.

The businesses, both existing medical marijuana dispensaries, open at 8 a.m.

Crossing state lines with any marijuana is illegal at the federal level.

The state of ME is working out the rules before the first marijuana retail shops open. "We've been working on this for a long time, and to finally see everything come together as well as it has. really proud of our team and all the hard work they've put in".

Items for sale will include various strains of marijuana flower, pre-rolled joints and edibles such as brownies and chocolate bars.

Now that the two stores are open, the Cannabis Control Commission will continue to process license applications for more stores.

Like Massachusetts, Mainers legalized recreational marijuana in 2016.
