Man Was 'Huffing' Just Before Crash That Killed 3 Girl Scouts and Adult

Lake Hallie police say Treu and a passenger in his pickup truck told police they had been intentionally inhaling chemical vapors, or huffing, just before the crash around 11:30 a.m. Saturday. Treu, 21, is being held on suspicion of homicide by intoxicated use of a vehicle and homicide by negligent use of a vehicle.

Handcuffed and wearing a leather restraint around her waist, the girl sobbed as she appeared in Chippewa County Circuit Court on Monday.

Authorities say Treu's black pickup truck was traveling northbound on a two-lane road when the vehicle crossed over the centerline and veered into the ditch hitting the Girl Scout troop. The children and their adult chaperones wore bright green safety vests as they walked along both sides of County Highway P, which they had adopted as a community service project. All members of the group were in the ditch, not on the pavement or gravel shoulder at the time of the crash.

A 10-year-old girl has appeared in court in Wisconsin charged with killing a six-month-old boy.

Police had already identified him as the suspect; an officer tracked vehicle fluid from Treu's auto less than 2 miles north into Chippewa Falls city limits.

Police say the fourth-graders and a mother were collecting trash in Lake Hallie Saturday morning when they were struck by the truck.

Treu is accused of huffing before a crash that happened Saturday. She said this photo was taken shortly before the crash that took the life of her 9-year-old daughter, Jayna. Words can not describe our Lake Hallie community's sorrow for the witnesses, victims, and their families.

Postal workers in Sarnia were among the latest to walk off the job as nation-wide rotating strikes continued Tuesday. Monday's strike means there will be no mail delivery in Rockwood, Elora, Fergus, Arthur, Belwood or Guelph.

Girl Scouts sang songs in memory of the victims and a makeshift memorial of teddy bears, balloons and candles was set up on two wooden benches.

Police said that they received a call from a caretaker saying that they had found the boy bleeding from the head and unresponsive.

"It's just devastating", she told CBS Minnesota. Haylee's mother, Sara Jo Schneider, 32, was with the Girl Scout troop and was also hit and killed, officials said.

"I was in tears this morning".

He described Hinkle as a "fun-loving girl", and her mother as a someone who had faith and a objective.

The Girl Scouts of the U.S. also spoke out Sunday to express their grief.

"Our hearts are broken for the girls and families of the Girl Scouts of the Northwestern Great Lakes", CEO Sylvia Acevedo said in a statement, according to the Associated Press.
