Manchester City risk losing Benjamin Mendy until the new year after the France defender underwent surgery on Wednesday night on a knee injury in a fresh injury blow for the Premier League champions.

Mendy missed seven months of City's Premier League-winning campaign last season after rupturing the anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee.

The France global played the full 90 minutes in City's 3-1 derby victory over Manchester United on Sunday but was forced to withdraw from the national team squad on Monday.

No official timeframe has been put on his recovery but Goal understands the France worldwide is hoping to be back in contention in around one month's time.

The video immediately went viral on social media, with Fox Sports reporter Michael Rapaport calling for the player to be arrested. He put up 48 points and 25 rebounds in Fitchburg State's first two games of the season. "There was no real setup to this".

City issued a statement late on Wednesday confirming Mendy had been operated on following medical checks at a clinic in Barcelona.

'The Frenchman, who played the full 90 minutes in the weekend's 3-1 win over rivals Manchester United, travelled to join up with his national team before withdrawing from the squad.

He posted on Instagram: "Other knee was jealous but the operation went well and it's all good now be back soon guys u just have to find another FPL captain for some games".

The defender returned from that problem and has made 10 total appearances for City this season, but is now facing another spell on the sideline.
