"Manu's disappointed. He desperately wanted to play for England again", scrum head coach Neal Hatley said.

Co-captain Owen Farrell is the starting flyhalf for England against South Africa at Twickenham on Saturday, and George Ford is demoted to the reserves. "There are enough people on the field to have played center and I can move there if things crop up".

Tuilagi was set to make his first Test appearance since 2016 from the bench but it was confirmed on Friday that he will join the lengthy injury list for England.

Manu Tuilagi has been ruled out of England's match-day squad on the eve of their Test against South Africa as the centre's wretched run with injury continues.

"Manu picked up a very minor strain to his groin yesterday (Thursday) during training", Hatley told reporters at Twickenham today. "He's one of the best support line runners who scores tries wherever he goes".

We have a "how" and that is the most important thing we have. Even in the first half, we were able to have a go. Good game, bad result but a fantastic reaction.

Placing Farrell a spot inside his usual position allowed the inclusion of Ben Te'o at inside center, despite Te'o being limited to only 28 minutes of rugby for Worcester since May due to thigh and calf injuries.

"Ben's a big-game player", Farrell said.

"For me playing fly-half is similar to playing centre".

"We are expecting him to be right for New Zealand week". We've got to be ready for everything.
