Marijuana legalization on the ballot in four states

MI voters approved a law that legalized the possession, use, and cultivation of marijuana products by those who are at least 21 years of age.

With Michigan voting to legalize adult use, neighbors like OH and IL could soon follow suit to help build a market in that region.

MI is now one of nine states that allow recreational use of the substance, including California, Colorado, and Washington, D.C. Tilray, the largest publicly traded pot stock, gained as much as 9.3 per cent, while US-listed shares of Cronos rose as much as 6.6 per cent. Aurora Cannabis Inc. and Canopy Growth Corp. gained as well. While branded Ontario Cannabis Stores have yet to materialize - they are expected in 2019 - Ontario residents looking to purchase government-sanctioned marijuana have done so online, a process complicated by Ontario Post strikes and sky-high demand. Heidi Heitkamp (D) was strong enough to overwhelm the Measure 3 legalization initiative.

In Missouri, two of three medical marijuana initiatives won.

In Alabama, an amendment to the state's constitution will formally "recognize and support the sanctity of unborn life and rights of children, including the right to life" The Republican-backed Amendment 2 does not specifically outlaw or restrict abortion in Alabama. Patients not living within 100 miles of a dispensary would be able to grow six plants at home. In addition to the public health and safety benefits associated with regulating marijuana, the state will have a significant new stream of tax revenue.

Amendment 3, on the other hand, would have placed a 15 percent tax on weed you'd buy at a storefront, and a tax on wholesale bud. Proposition 2 was passed with 53 percent of the vote. Missouri also voted to legalize medical marijuana Tuesday.
