A Masked Gunman Killed Twelve People On ‘Student Night’ At A Country Music Bar Outside Los Angeles

The venue in the quiet, upscale Thousand Oaks suburb had been hosting an event for college students, with possibly several hundred young people in attendance, Captain Garo Kuredjian of the Ventura County Sheriff's office said earlier.

Police have identified the suspected killer as 28-year-old Ian David Long, a former Marine. He was later found dead at or near an office in the business.

It is yet to be determined if he shot himself or was shot by other officers, according to Ventura County Sheriff Geoff Dean. The device is illegal in California.

Dean said the slain deputy was on the phone with his wife before telling her he had to go respond to a scene.

"He went out a real hero".

- After the Wednesday night shooting, authorities recovered a handgun inside the Borderline Bar & Grill, a Glock 21.45-caliber handgun, which they believe Long used in the attack.

Witnesses said that some of those at the bar had survived the massacre in Las Vegas just over a year ago when a man shot 58 people dead at a country music festival.

The Borderline Bar is popular with students of California Lutheran University, Pepperdine University and other area schools.

He first fired on a person working the door, then appeared to shoot at random at people inside, they said.

'All I wanted to do was get as many people out as possible, ' he said while wearing a bloodstained t-shirt.

Among those killed was a three-decade veteran of the sheriff's department, 54-year-old Sergeant Ron Helus, who was married, had a grown son and was close to retirement. He died at the hospital.

I have been fully briefed on the awful shooting in California. "It could have been much, much worse", he said. Neighbor Tom Hanson had called the police with concerns about Long's behavior.

Officers found him dead inside. 'As I told his wife, he died a hero; he went into save lives, to save other people, ' he said. California Luthern University graduate Jason Meek also died in the tragedy, the school confirmed in a statement .

Hanson told the Associated Press he had heard shouting and loud noises coming from the Longs' home.

"We will be sure to paint a picture of the state of mind of the subject and do our best to identify a motivation", Delacourt said, adding that the FBI would investigate any possible "radicalization" or links to militant groups.

Berge, who took care of Long's mother's dogs, said she told him following that incident she anxious her son might take his own life but did not fear he would hurt her.

Long had no criminal record.

Authorities urged the public to avoid the area. Active law enforcement incident.

The U.S. Marine Corps issued a statement extending "its deepest condolences to the families of the victims in this senseless tragedy".

The top Democrat on the House Judiciary Committee, Jerry Nadler of NY, said lawmakers would start crafting a gun-control bill when the House convenes with a Democratic majority in early January.

Speaking to reporters after hearing of her son's death, a heartbroken Susan Schmidt-Orfanos called for gun control.

Thousand Oaks was named the third-safest city in the United States for 2018 by the website Niche.
