The call was made through Ms Trump's communications director, Stephanie Grisham, and comes after Ms Ricardel reportedly quarrelled with the first lady's staff over a recent trip to Africa.

After months of contention with President Donald Trump, Homeland Security secretary Kirstjen Nielsen is reportedly being forced out of her position soon, five current and former officials said in a Washington Post report published Monday.

There was a report Tuesday by the Wall Street Journal that Ricardel had been escorted from the White House, but the White House denied this.

The first lady reportedly feuded with Ms Ricardel during her tour of Africa in October, according to USA media.

In 2000, an independent counsel reported that Hillary Clinton had given false testimony about her involvement in the firing of several aides in the White House travel office under her husband, President Bill Clinton.

Mrs Ricardel apparently had spats with other major figures in the Trump administration, including Defence Secretary Jim Mattis and Chief of Staff John Kelly.

The statement came as the U.S. media reported that President Donald Trump was considering a shake up in the White House West Wing, and might consider removing White House Chief of Staff John Kelly or Department of Homeland Security Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen.

Senior White House adviser Kellyanne Conway attempted to cast doubt Tuesday on the anonymously sourced reports about a staff shake-up. The first lady's team had told the president that it suspected Ricardel was leaking negative stories about Melania Trump to the press.

Nick Ayers, chief of staff to Vice President Mike Pence, is reportedly being considered for Kelly's job.

Chief of Staff John F. Kelly has been fighting to keep her (pictured October 2017) after pushing for her to get the role. Former Attorney General Jeff Sessions was thought to be on the outs for months before he actually was pushed out.

Nielsen, who served in President George W. Bush's administration, never overcame internal skepticism about her allegiance to Trump.

The White House and Mr Kelly have not yet commented on the NBC report. But he has repeatedly defended what appears to be a chaotic administration, terming it a "smooth running machine" and claiming that people are clamoring to work for him.

Sources say that Nielsen had a contentious working relationship with the President.

Now that the midterm elections are over, Donald Trump is now free to make changes to his cabinet.
