"I have been involved in club football for the last 15 years, so this will be a new challenge but one that I know well".

Ireland's record goalscorer Robbie Keane, as well as former Wolves boss Terry Connor, will join McCarthy as assistants.

"And if I do badly and we don't qualify, you won't want me here anyway". "I've the utmost respect for Roy, he was a wonderful player, who did so much to to get us to Japan and Korea and he has been a great player". "If we do really well in the next two years, then there might be a Premier League job there for me, if we don't, then you won't want me to stay".

FAI Chief Executive John Delaney confirmed that Stephen Kenny will be responsible for all Irish under-age teams as well as the Under-21's until he takes over the senior side. "So it kind of fits for me".

Mick McCarthy was unveiled as the new Irish manager on Sunday, during a press conference at the Aviva Stadium, as the FAI look to usher in the post-Martin O'Neill era.

McCarthy's previous reign lasted six years and culminated in Ireland reaching the knockout stages of the 2002 World Cup, where they were knocked out on penalties by Spain.

Rumours had been swirling around during the week following the news on Wednesday that Martin O'Neill would be stepping away from his role as the Irish manager alongside his assistant Roy Keane.

McCarthy believes he is "older and wiser" than during his first stint which ran from 1996 to 2002. "If we don't qualify, I guess, I'll be off and Stephen might get the job a bit early".

"I'm honoured and excited to be back with the Republic of Ireland", said McCarthy. "I am delighted that the FAI Board and CEO have given me this opportunity to lead the team to EURO 2020".

"I spoke to Declan's father, Sean, today, and I had a really good conversation with him. Well, he has got into the West Ham team, he's doing well and I am going to go speak to him in December when his father is around and sit down and have a chat with them both".

"I hope that I leave a team that has qualified and a good team and a good squad behind that he can take over and try and qualify for the World Cup in 2022".

Kenny, who has stepped down from his role as manager of the League of Ireland champions, is not scheduled to speak to the media until Monday.

The former Ipswich manager outlined that Connor has been his assistant in a number of jobs since 2006 and also highlighted the reasoning behind his inclusion of Keane as part of his backroom staff.

The Republic will learn their Euro 2020 qualifiers opponents at next Sunday's draw which takes place in Dublin.
