It seems, in the end, it was a challenge that Soltera could not defeat, as the VP is leaving Microsoft at the end of the year, according to ZDNet.

Soltero is said to be heading to less challenging work, such as being an entrepreneur, with Cortana moving under the care of Perry Clarke, who is only the GM of Exchange Server, demonstrating the diminishing status of Microsoft's voice assistant. I asked Microsoft for comment on his planned departure and was told by a spokesperson that the company had nothing to share.

"We are grateful for Javier's impact and strategic leadership over the last four years at Microsoft, and wish him well as he returns to his entrepreneurial roots".

If accurate, Soltero's exit could be a sign of how Microsoft will handle Cortana going forward.

Prior to Houston, he spent time (2014-16) with the San Francisco 49ers, appearing in 26 games during his stint with the club. Ellington might be the Lions' new slot receiver after they traded Golden Tate to the Philadelphia Eagles a week ago.

Soltero originally joined Microsoft with the company's 2014 acquisition of Acompli. Soltero led Outlook and Outlook Mobile, and was later head of strategy for Office.

In addition to the announcement of Soltero's planned departure, Microsoft also made public internally a few other reorg pieces, I've heard. "The past 4 years have been an incredible experience".

Microsoft is in the midst of trying to reposition Cortana from a standalone digital assistant to more of an assistance aide. At the same time, Microsoft and Amazon have been steadily unveiling new integrations between Alexa and Cortana, the fruits of a surprising alliance announced previous year.
