A North Carolina mother is being charged with involuntary manslaughter for the death of her 1-year-old son who was swept away by flooding during Hurricane Florence.

The Union County Sheriff's Office announced the charges against 20-year-old Dazia Ideah Lee on Monday, reports CNN.

Dazia Ideah Lee's one-year-old son Kaiden Lee Welch drowned after he slipped from her hand in Hurricane Florence floodwater September 16.

Union County Sheriff Eddie Cathey said after a "very thorough investigation" authorities felt "these charges are appropriate".

The baby's body was found the following morning. "We feel these charges are appropriate", Sheriff Eddie Cathey says in a statement on Kaiden's "heartbreaking" death, as Lee had chosen on September 16 to circumvent a barricade erected to keep people off a flooded road; for that transgression, she received a misdemeanor charge.

Lee was given a criminal summons and is due in court November 20.

'The mother drove around the barricades on NC 218 and continued traveling east until her vehicle encountered rushing water flowing across the road, ' it said alongside a photograph of the boy.

Yutu blew out into the South China Sea later Tuesday and weakened into a storm, Philippine forecasters said. It knocked down trees and power posts, and ripped roofs off houses and stores, officials said.

The water from a rain-swollen creek pushed her auto off the road and left her stuck in a group of trees, authorities said.

Deputies said Lee's vehicle came to rest among a group of trees and that she grabbed her baby in his auto seat but lost her grip on him in the rushing water.

In a Facebook post September 16, the sheriff's office said search-and-rescue teams had spent hours searching for him after he was swept away in rushing waters from Richardson Creek.

Lee was shocked when she ended up in a flooded area and lost her child.

"I couldn't hold on anymore, and he let go", Lee told Fox 46.

Lee was also charged with a misdemeanor for driving on a closed highway.

"I was about to detour ..." I want to know whoever moved the barricades.
