Around 2,000 migrants that are part of a larger 7,000-strong caravan have reached the region, city officials said.

Around 800 migrants riding on 22 buses arrived at dawn in Tijuana, which is located across from San Diego, California, and walked from the highway into the city in massive waves of people, their belongings on their backs.

As the city has a capacity to host only 700 people, authorities opened a stadium and a sports complex for the use of migrants.

Late Wednesday, hundreds of Tijuana residents protested at a park where the migrants had set up camp along the fence between Mexico and the United States.

A third is reportedly waiting in Mexico City and will head north soon.

Officials in Tijuana are expecting to see up to 10,000 migrants arrive in the coming days.

Members of a migrant caravan started to meet some local resistance as they continued to arrive by the hundreds in the Mexican border city of Tijuana, where a group of residents clashed with migrants camped out by the US border fence.

Francisco Rueda, the top deputy to Baja California state Gov. Francisco Vega de la Madrid, said "This is not a crisis", but agreed that "this is an extraordinary situation".

Navarrete reminded the migrants that ever since they entered Mexico on October 19, the United States government has maintained "an extremely hostile discourse" against them.

It has a large American population and some 3,000 Haitians settled in the city, just south of San Diego, in 2016 after failing to cross the USA border.

Byron Jose Blandino, a 27-year-old bricklayer from Nicaragua who slept in the converted gymnasium, said he wanted to request asylum but not until he could speak with someone well-versed in USA law and asylum procedures.

As buses from western and central Mexico trickled in overnight and into the morning, families camped inside the bus terminal and waited for word on where they could find a safe place to sleep.

"The first thing is to wait", Blandino said.

'I feel better now that we've reached the border.

On Thursday, migrants who registered six weeks ago were getting their names called.

The number of US troops at the border with Mexico may have peaked at about 5,800, the USA commander of the mission told Reuters, noting he would start looking next week at whether to begin sending forces home or perhaps shifting some to new border positions. For that reason, the state has asked Mexican federal authorities to encourage people in other caravans to go to other border cities.

They joined more than 750 other caravan members who had travelled ahead and reached the city in recent days.

After about 12 hours, seven buses began arriving to collect the migrants, Rodriguez said, but they quickly filled up.
