More than 100 injured in Aleppo in terrorist gas attack

Syrian opposition refutes chemical attack claims

State news agency SANA said on Sunday that 107 people were injured, including children, after militants hit three districts with projectiles containing gases that caused choking.

Aleppo police chief Essam al-Shali told state TV the projectiles landed in the al-Khalidiya neighbourhood and wind conditions caused gas to spread.

Some of those affected by the gas were hospitalized, with the severity of cases ranging from mild to medium, SANA reported, citing hospital sources.

Abdel-Razak tweeted that "These are lies" soon after reports emerged of an attack in Aleppo that injured dozens of people.

A suspected chemical attack by rebels on the government-held Syrian city of Aleppo has left at least 50 civilians with breathing problems and blurred vision.

Earlier Saturday, rescue workers and the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said government shells landed in Jarjanaz, a rebel-held town in Idlib province, hitting students as they were leaving their school.

"We at the National Liberation Front deny the criminal, lying regime's allegations that revolutionaries targeted the city of Aleppo with any missiles and especially not any containing chlorine gas", it said.

Ten dead after boat capsizes in Lake Victoria
Over 200 people were killed in a Tanzanian ferry disaster in September, with officials saying it had been dangerously overcrowded. Police reports indicate that over 50 have been rescued on the capsised boat that docked off Saturday afternoon at 4:00 pm.

Rebel spokesman Mustafa Sejari dismisses the poison-gas claims. State TV interviewed doctors in a hospital who said most people were suffering from breathing problems and blurred vision.

A cease-fire in Aleppo and Idlib has been fraying in recent days. The shelling killed eight, including six children, according to the civil defense team in the opposition-held area.

Rebel commanders and opposition figures discredited the government reports, denying they lobbed gas into Aleppo and accusing Damascus of seeking to undermine an existing cease-fire and efforts to kickstart political talks.

Aleppo Governor Hussein Diab visited the injured at the hospital. Russian Federation and Iran have intervened on the side of Syria's government, ensuring its survival, while Turkey supports rebel groups in northern Syria to prevent Syrian Kurds establishing and expanding territory along its border.

A joint team from the United Nations and the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons accused Syria's government of using chlorine gas in at least two attacks in 2014 and 2015, and using the nerve agent sarin in an attack in April 2017 in the town of Khan Sheikhoun that killed about 100 people. But both sides of the conflict have accused each other throughout the war of using poison gas.

The conflict has killed more than 360,000 people and displaced millions.

The latter attack, which came in response to what the U.S. and its allies had insisted was another chemical attack in Douma on the outskirts of Damascus, saw 105 cruise missiles being fired from sea and air at Syrian government targets. It also blamed Islamic State militants for using mustard gas.
