The numbers provided by North West Region Governor Deben Tchoffo were larger than his earlier estimate of the people kidnapped in Nkwen, a village near the regional capital, Bamenda.

In several western Cameroonian regions, the separatists have imposed curfews and shut down schools as hundreds of residents have fled the crisis-hit region to more peaceful areas. One of the original gripes was that French-speaking teachers were being deployed to English-speaking schools in the Northwest and Southwest regions.

The separatist movement gathered momentum in 2017 after a government crackdown on peaceful demonstrations.

There have been other kidnappings from schools in North West Region. The video could not be independently verified, but parents have said on social media that they recognize their children in the video. "They were taken to the bush", the source said.

An unverified video has been circulating on social media that appears to show the boys identifying themselves and the school, as well as saying that they had been taken by the "Amba boys". Ambazonia is the name of the state that separatists are seeking to establish. "They threatened to shoot some people. all the big boys they rounded up, and the small ones they left them behind".

"The military came in and went to the principal's house where we realised that her door was bashed and entered into, the glasses are still there on the ground", she told the BBC.

The separatists have vowed to destabilise the regions as part of the strategy for creating a breakaway state. Armed separatists have also killed teachers who disobeyed orders to keep schools closed. Their whereabouts are still unknown.

Dozens of people, a lot of them children, have been kidnapped from a school in the city of Bamenda in Cameroon's northwestern Anglophone region, which is struggling with a separatist insurgency.

About 20 percent of Cameroon's 22 million people are English speaking.

It is not a new grievance.

The French colony gained independence in 1960, becoming Cameroon.

In an October presidential election, opposition candidate Maurice Kamto declared victory against Biya, who has ruled since 1982, but Biya's ruling party dismissed claims of defeat and accused Kamto of breaking the law.

Opposition parties allege that the poll was rigged, but legal attempts to overturn the result failed.
