New Jersey sending training teams to centers amid fatal outbreaks

Nine children were dead due to an outbreak of adenovirus at a rehabilitation center in the USA state of New Jersey, officials announced Sunday.

The Health Department said in a statement Monday the new diagnosis brings the total number of adenovirus cases at the Wanaque Center for Nursing and Rehabilitation to 26.

Elnahal says the deployments are in response to this month's fatal outbreaks.

Adenovirus usually poses little risk for healthy people and typically causes mild cold or flu symptoms.

The nine children who died in the outbreak that began September 26 range in age from toddler to young adult, with a lot of them under age 18. A premature baby died amid bacterial infections at the Newark hospital this month.

The infection can cause other illnesses, including pneumonia, diarrhea and bronchitis, the department said.

The strain found in the rehab center outbreak - type 7 - is among the more potent types and sometimes causes more serious respiratory illness, especially among those with weak immune systems. The most recent outbreak of the illness at the facility, about 32 miles (50 km) northwest of New York City, was October 22.

Elnahal said that pediatric long-term care facilities like the Wanaque Center and University Hospital's neonatal ICU, take care of extremely medically fragile infants and children.

The facility, which includes a pediatric center, has been instructed not to admit new patients until the outbreak ends, the department said.

The department became aware of the presence of the bacteria, known as acinetobacter baumannii, on October 1, according to a release. Two DOH teams have been closely monitoring the situation, infection control protocols are being followed and they are tracking cases of the infection, the department said.

Those cases are not related to the virus at the Wanaque center, the Health Department said.
